# App names and identifiers

An app has a human-readable **Name** and a stable **App id**. The name is the title people see on the Apps card and in the workspace. The id identifies the app and forms part of its permanent address, together with your tenant's URL name.

## Identifier rules

An app id uses lowercase letters, digits, and dashes, starts with a letter or digit, and contains at most 100 characters. The creation form initially derives an id from the name by lowercasing it and replacing other character groups with dashes. Derived suggestions are shortened to 63 characters; a manually entered valid id can use the full 100-character limit.

While you have not edited the id, changing the name updates the suggestion. Once you edit or explicitly apply a suggested id, the field is yours to control. Changing an existing app's name in Settings does not change its id or address.

## Why an id can be taken

Ids are unique across the tenant, while your own Apps list may show only apps you own. An id can therefore be unavailable even if you cannot find a matching card.

| Situation | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| You already own an active app with the id | Open that app or choose another id. |
| An app in your Trash holds the id | Restore it, or permanently delete it if you no longer need it. |
| Another member's app holds the id | Choose a different id; the other member's app need not appear in your list. |
| Another creation wins while your form is open | Review the conflict message and use a new suggestion or another id. |

The availability check is advisory. Creation checks again, so a previously free suggestion can still collide. Strive can apply an alternative automatically to an untouched derived id and tells you which id it used. A manually chosen id is not silently replaced.

## Share the right address

Use the workspace's copy or **Open** controls to obtain the app address. Sharing an address does not grant access. Use [Sharing](/docs/apps/sharing) to decide who may open it, or create a separate [Share link](/docs/apps/share-links) for anonymous use.
