Extend a timed app's lease
Add time to the current running session without changing its saved lifecycle policy.
A Timed app runs until its lease expires. Overview shows the remaining time and offers Extend while the app is running. Use an extension when you need more time for the current session.
Add time
- Open the app's Overview.
- Check that its lifecycle is Timed and that it is running.
- Choose the primary Extend +1h button to add one hour, or open the adjacent amount menu.
- Select 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, or 24 hours.
- Wait for the operation to finish and check the updated countdown.
Selecting an amount from the menu extends the lease immediately. It also becomes the amount stated on the primary button for that Overview visit; it is not a separate preference you must then submit. Re-entering Overview resets the quick action to its default one-hour amount.
Read the countdown
The countdown displays minutes and seconds under an hour, and hours and minutes for longer intervals. It becomes urgent near expiry. Reaching zero means the lease has expired and the environment can be reclaimed; the status then catches up with the actual lifecycle operation.
An extension adds to the current lease. The menu bounds each individual grant to 24 hours, while repeated grants can make the total current lease longer. This is different from the saved lifecycle duration in Settings, whose policy maximum is 24 hours.
When Extend is unavailable
Always-on apps do not have an expiring timed lease. On-demand apps sleep based on activity and do not offer manual lease extension. A stopped or transitioning app must finish its current operation before it has a running lease to extend.
Extend is temporarily disabled while another extension is in flight or the app is being deleted. Wait for the outcome rather than repeatedly submitting.
To change how future sessions behave, use Lifecycle settings. Extending the current session does not change the app's stored mode or policy duration.
