Read, dismiss, and clear notifications

Keep the inbox useful without changing the underlying work.

The notification inbox offers several actions with different meanings.

ActionWhat changes
OpenMarks the item read and opens its resource or notification detail
Mark as readKeeps the item in history while removing its unread state
Mark all as readMarks the applicable inbox items read
Dismiss or deleteRemoves your notification or dismisses a broadcast for you
Clear allClears the applicable items in your inbox

Triage the inbox

First inspect failures and warnings that still need action. Open the resource and check its current state. Mark informative items read when you want to retain them. Dismiss items that are no longer useful.

Clearing the inbox does not cancel operations or delete apps and workflow results. It also does not repair a delivery problem. The Assistant's triage skill can help identify important items before proposing cleanup.

Concurrent updates

New messages can arrive while you are clearing or marking an earlier set. A new unread item after cleanup does not necessarily mean the action failed. Grouped updates can represent a newer state than the item you originally reviewed.

The Assistant's cleanup card describes the set it is clearing. Review that set before applying. There is no general Undo that recreates every dismissed notification.

Recover a failed cleanup

If a cleanup request fails, refresh the inbox and inspect its current state. Do not assume every item was removed because it briefly disappeared from the screen. If an item is already gone, another action or tab may have removed it.
